ELKHART COUNTY, Ind. -- A mobile phone application is providing a new way to keep your family safe in Elkhart County.

The app, called “ECSD Tip,” allows the public to send anonymous tips to the Elkhart County Sheriff's Department, while also allowing officers to anonymously respond back via the app.

But officials say that the reply may not be immediate and that the app isn't for real-time issues.

Over the Memorial Day weekend, the sheriff's department saw that folks were confused about what is and isn’t an appropriate tip.

They also want to remind everyone that this app isn't replacing 911 calls for emergencies.
They say it’s great for providing tips about drug dealers in your area, or individuals wanted for a crime.

But you should not use the app for an emergency or domestic dispute.
