Coach Levon Johnson is entering his fourth season as head coach of the Elkhart Central Blue Blazzers and has seen his teams get better and better each year. In 2010 they went 1-9 then improved to 4-6 in 2011. Last season they broke .500 for the first time under coach Johnson with a record of 6-5.
Johnson admits that it is nice to see his team continue to improve but knows that they want more than 6-5 saying "They have had a lot of people tell them that that is success and for them that is not enough and they want to keep moving forward."
It is also important to remember that the last Elkhart Central team to play a game was the baseball team when they brought home a state championship earlier this year. Coach doesn't think that adds pressure to his squad but instead helps to motivate them. "I think that it adds expectations and shows that it can be done" adding "You wan't those expectations to rise." A sentiment that was backed by offensive linemen Adriana Arellano who said "It is nice to see your school win, and you want that too. It would be nice to have a football state championship back at Elkhart Central."
The Blue Blazzers kick off their season August 23 against Elkhart Memorial in the battle for the Mangy Lion to open the season.
