Could the old Elkhart Armory be saved? Soon the city will decide whether to demolish the building along the city's main street, or try to save it.
One group, being sponsored by an anonymous donor, would like to restore the Armory as a gift to the city.
The team, represented by Cripe Design, is one of two that submitted bids to rehabilitate the old building.
However after several attempts in the past and the building's deteriorating state, it was assumed the city would have to demolish it.
Now that could change depending on how the redevelopment commission votes.
“We are trying to solicit potential users for an office, restaurant, retail… those kinds of uses,” says Daniel Cripe from Cripe Design. “Once we have the restoration in progress then we'll concentrate on the inside of the building.”
A decision will be made by Thursday by the Elkhart Redevelopment Commission.
They've had time to review the bids for demolition or restoration.
