A Goshen student was arrested Tuesday for choking a teacher on school grounds.
The Goshen Police Department confirms that a 9-year-old was arrested for battery on a teacher and strangulation at Prairie View Elementary. The child was later released into his parent's custody.
This case is particularly delicate because the student is emotionally disabled and was in a special education classroom when the incident took place, according to Goshen Community Schools superintendent Diane Woodworth.
Woodworth tells Newscenter 16 that the teacher did not suffer any serious injuries. Police were called to the school shortly after the incident.
No word yet on what caused the student to attack the teacher. Woodworth said that because the student has some special needs there are a wide range of things that may have triggered his actions.
The student was at the elementary school as part of the Elkhart County Special Education Cooperative, according to Woodworth.
Indiana law states that battery on a teacher is a Class D felony, in adult court. All matters relating to this case are being referred to the Elkhart County Juvenile Court.
The principal and teacher at Prairie View are considering filing charges, not because of the gravity of the incident, but to get the child the help he needs.
The student's name is not being released because he is a minor.
