MISHAWAKA Flames tore through the roof of a Mishawaka home Thursday morning. No one was hurt, but the damage was extensive.

It all started at around 3:30a.m. in the 1800 block of 3rd Street in Mishawaka. Three departments responded and blocked off several streets. Flames were already showing through the roof and front windows of the single-level home.

No one was inside. Police believe the family may have recently sold the house, but there was still furniture and other possessions inside.

Within 15 minutes firefighters had it under control.

“At this point, when you have a front to back fire like that, we went defensive right away,” Mishawaka Battalion Chief Bryon Woodward says. “We had a couple of openings existing already, so we just put a couple bigger lines through the window and the front door, got a good knock on it. That way we just went inside and mopped it up after.”

The house is considered a total loss. Much of the ceiling collapsed, and the walls opened up.

Investigators are still working to determine what caused the fire.
