Eagles invade Merrifield Park in Mishawaka

Despite the cold weather, Merrifield Park in Mishawaka has seen a good number of visitors lately.

The past few weeks have been filled with eagle spottings.

“At least two or three dozen,” said George Fowler, who works at Eberhart Golf Course. “I work here, I’m here every day and it seems like the longer they were here, the more accustomed they got to the traffic and people viewing them.”

Laura Werner snapped some pictures on March 16th as she walked near Monkey Island near the boat launch.

“As the ice started to melt off and the water opened up a little further down here, we began to see then come down along here and doing their fishing, you would see one every once in a while with a fish in its talons flying along the river,” said Fowler.

John Goeller was walking in the park about a week and a half ago when he suddenly came upon an eagle. Goeller didn’t have his camera at the time so he went home and got it. When Goeller returned, the eagle was still there.

George Fowler says he hasn’t see any eagles this week. He fears that the birds may have relocated.
