Dry Tailgate event hosted by Digger, Moyers benefits children of addicts

Drug and alcohol addiction affects more than just the person dealing with the problem; it can also hurt friends and family members, especially kids.

That's where Camp Mariposa comes in. It is a place where children can feel safe and have some fun

So, Thursday night, folks came out to Granger to help support the program, and get pumped for the Notre Dame game on Saturday all at the same time.

The Moyer Foundation, which funds the camp, hosted their second annual Dry Tailgate event.

The goal was to bring people together in a non-alcoholic environment and raise awareness of a program that continues to make a huge difference in the lives of the thousands of kids in Michiana living with addiction in their families.

“The guilt some of these kids live with because of their parents' addiction that they throw back at them,” said Digger Phelps, event co-host, and former Notre Dame Coach. “This is one way of getting these kids to stand up and be strong and have hope so that they can go in a positive direction in the game of life.”

“Addiction has been around for a really long time. It's an illness and disease that we have to really treat like cancer,” said Moyer Foundation founders Karen and Jamie Moyer. “You have to give a voice to it and you have to support those going through it. And the children of those who are going through it, we can break the cycle with them and that's happening right here in Indiana with Camp Mariposa.”

Jamie Moyer is the oldest player in major league history to record a hit and win a game as a pitcher.

In St. Joseph County alone, there are more than 9,000 children living with at least one drug or alcohol-addicted parent.
