A semi driver remains in critical condition Wednesday after an early morning accident that forced rescuers to amputate his leg to free him from the wreckage.
The accident happened on interstate 80/94 in Gary, IN.
A flower truck delivery driver slammed into another semi. The interstate was closed for hours as a result of the accident.
According to rescuers at the scene, the rig was crushed on top of one driver. The only way to free him from the wreckage was to amputate one of his legs from the calf down.
Doctors say if it were not for the quick actions of the medical team responding to the scene, the driver would not have survived.
Police say the crash was caused by a third driver who was suspected of driving while intoxicated and was being followed by an unmarked police car .
That driver sits in the Lake County Jail on charges of Operating While Intoxicated Refusal.
