Elkhart, Ind. A driver is recovering, after he drove his SUV into an apartment building in Elkhart. It happened on S. Michigan St., shortly before 3 a.m. Wednesday.
Rescue crews arrived to find the driver outside his vehicle. That man was rushed to the hospital and is being treated for non-life threatening injuries.
Police say the driver was heading southbound on Michigan Street when he crashed into the apartment building known as Spring Foundation Place.
Two adults and two children were inside the apartment at the time of the crash. Luckily, they were upstairs sleeping so no one was injured.
“We were sleeping, of course and I heard a boom and thought it was lightning, thought it was thunder, so I turned over and went back to sleep cause I have to go to work in a few hours and my sister runs into my room and yells, “There is a car, there is a car in our house!” explains Teresa Williams.
Williams says she walked down the stairs and saw the SUV’s lights and heard it trying to pull in and out of the house. That’s when she called 911 and waited for police.
Police believe the SUV driver suffered a medical issue right before he crashed, but he will be screened for drug and alcohol use.
Williams says she hopes the driver is okay, but says she is just happy her family wasn’t hurt. She says if this crash happened at any other time, they could have been.
“They fell asleep on the couch watching a movie with their mom and so they were asleep. Thank God she woke up and brought them upstairs and we were all safe. That is the biggest thing,” says Williams. “If it had happened an hour or so later, I would have been sitting on that couch because I get up for work and I sit there for a while and get me something to drink and get myself together and get ready for work.”
