A Michiana bus driver is being hailed as a hero after her quick thinking prevented what could have been a disastrous situation for students on Friday afternoon.
Alta Beers, the driver of Bus 88 for Elkhart Community Schools, was taking kids home from Mary Beck Elementary when she saw smoke coming from the back of the bus.
She pulled over near Eighth and Franklin Streets and evacuated the children to a safe area while she called for help.
Those students were picked up by another bus.
Beers later discovered that a shorted-out exterior light was causing the smoke. That faulty wiring has since been repaired, and Bus 88 will be back in service on Monday.
School officials say the bus had been inspected this summer by the Indiana State Police, but – like all vehicles – buses can develop unanticipated problems.
