Driver of weekend hit and run linked to '09 deadly pedestrian crash

NewsCenter 16 has uncovered a bitter layer to the story of Brandon Gonzales’ deadly hit and run crash that left bicyclist Timothy Grant, 54, of Mishawaka dead.

On the evening of May 7, 2009, Gonzales' maternal grandfather, Leroy Hoover, 56, hit two sisters walking near the corner of Dodge Ave. and E. 11th St. in Mishawaka.

Shyla Aston, 4, and Shianna Aston, 6, both died from their injuries.

Although Hoover had a valid driver’s license, didn’t run a stop sign, wasn't drunk and didn’t leave the scene of the accident, tests did find traces of marijuana in his blood stream.

A judge ultimately sentenced Hoover to 60 days in jail, ordered he attend substance abuse classes and suspended his driver's license.
