For the second time in as many months, somebody opened fire around closing time at a South Bend bar.
Police are still trying to piece together exactly what happened at the Palacio Tropical at 2012 West Western Avenue around 3:00 a.m. Thursday morning.
The Palacio is about two blocks away from the Anchor Inn where bar patron Cesar Flores was shot to death in the parking lot September 9th, following a dispute with the disc jockey.
The first officers to arrive at the Palacio said they heard at least two dozen gunshots go off outside the bar. One witness told police that at least one shot had been fired inside the bar.
Police found no shooting victim on the premises, although a shooting victim later found them. “At this point we've got a victim ultimately that goes to a second location and when the victim gets to the second location he decides to transport himself to the hospital. We get a call from the hospital that they have a walk-in gunshot victim, and it’s determined that it was actually at this address on Western Avenue where he was shot. He's shot in the hip it's a non- life threatening injury. He's not from the South Bend area, he's from Indianapolis and does not have any sort of information on who might have fired the shot,” said Capt. Phil Trent of the South Bend Police Department.
The wounded man has been identified as 36 year old Willie Hubbard from Indianapolis.
Police believe that Hubbard was not the intended target of the gunfire.
The shots sent the crowd scrambling and police found very few witnesses on scene by the time calm had been restored. “There’s a very good chance in the pandemonium of, you know, leaving the scene, just trying to get away from this, somebody saw who and could actually name who was firing these shots, but they were unwilling to stick around to speak with police, which in a situation like this I can understand that you would just want to leave, but now in the aftermath it would be more than it would be very helpful if somebody would at least call Crime Stoppers and give us a tip,” Capt. Trent said.
