SOUTH BEND, Ind.--- Father's Day isn't the only reason to celebrate.

This week also marks a very important anniversary.

Today, dozens of people gathered at Lasalle Park in South Bend to celebrate what's now known as 'Juneteenth.'

The day kicked off with the Major Taylor Bike Ride to help raise awareness of diabetes.

Then folks gathered for fellowship and singing in the park.

It's all in honor of June 19th, 1865, when the final slaves were made aware of their freedom.

“It’s a joyous day because of what it represents and how important it is as far as knowing that the emancipation proclamation was two and a half years before Juneteenth of 1865,” said Craig Clark of the South Bend chapter of the Indiana Black Expo.

The event is hosted by South Bend's chapter of the Indiana Black Expo.
