South Bend's signature event, Fridays by the Fountain, will go on in 2014.

The question is: Will the fountain itself be on?

The fountain on the Jon R. Hunt Plaza, outside the Morris Theatre, is in need of repairs.

At this time, it's hoped that those repairs will be completed by the scheduled start of this year's lunchtime concert series on June 6.

"We've had some repair and maintenance issues the last couple of years," admits Deputy Mayor Mark Neal. "Right now we have a safety issue with some electrical concerns. We want to get those addressed, and do sufficient repair work so the fountain can be used by the Fridays by the Fountain and events this summer."

The latest round of repairs is expected to cost $28,000.

The complete renovation of the fountain could run as much as $150,000.

That won't be discussed until after the Parks and Recreation Department finishes putting together its five year master plan.
