It's an expensive yet powerful treatment that's helping ease arthritic pain for more and more animals.
More veterinarians are now offering stem cell therapy for dogs and cats suffering from arthritis, hip dysplasia, and other joint pain.
One treatment takes place in one day and so far the results have been very successful.
At Western Veterinary Clinic in South Bend, Arrow is the 15th patient to receive the treatment. He is a 15-year-old golden retriever suffering from arthritis and hip dysplasia.
Monday morning Dr Chris Payton took 20 grams of excess fat from his abdomen. The fat was then broke down and the solution was injected in his two hip joints.
“When you see results, most of the time with the acupuncture or chiropractic, the stem cell therapy is quicker than having them on meds. Plus the expression on the owner's face, that's the reward that I get,” says Payton.
Results can take 24 hours to two weeks. Treatment costs around two thousand dollars.
