DETROIT Detroit police Chief James Craig is expected to urge residents to stand up and take back city streets.

Craig's initial "Chief's Call To Action" is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Triumph Church on East Grand Boulevard.

Information will be given on how to start block clubs and neighborhood citizen patrols.

Craig will be joined by senior pastor Solomon Kinloch Jr. and radio talk show host Angelo Henderson.

Detroit has one of the nation's highest violent-crime rates. Last year, Detroit recorded 386 criminal homicides, a 12 percent increase over 2011.

Craig was named chief in May. He started his law enforcement career in Detroit in 1977 and also served in Los Angeles; Portland, Maine; and Cincinnati, where he became police chief since 2011.
