LANSING, Mich. Democrats are backing legislation to repeal Michigan's requirement that people or businesses wanting abortion insurance coverage buy an extra policy in advance.

The bills are expected to die in the Republican-controlled Legislature. But Democratic lawmakers are keeping a spotlight on the new law this election year.

They held a news conference Monday with the law's critics including a doctor at the University of Michigan's obstetrics and gynecology department.

The measure doesn't require women suffering miscarriages to have supplemental abortion coverage. But Dr. Timothy Johnson says there's uncertainty and confusion for health providers, insurers and patients in two types of medical cases - "incomplete" miscarriages and fetal abnormalities.

Critics also say rider insurance isn't even available to women buying their own insurance and there's no exception for rape.
