The body of 42-year-old Andre Byrd was found early Thursday morning in a South Bend alley in the 400 block of Walnut Street.
An autopsy has concluded that Byrd's death is a homicide by gunshot wound to the head.
The call was made to police just before 5:15 a.m.
Byrd was identified through fingerprints, according to Commander Tim Corbett.
St. Joseph County Metro Homicide is continuing to investigate.
Eusevia Aguilar said that it was her husband who first discovered the body. He was on his way to work, when he pulled his truck out into the alley and saw a man's body on the ground.
Neighbors like Severo Jimenez said that the area around the crime scene is typically calm.
"Everybody around here is pretty close, we all know each other," he said.
Many of the residents on the block have families with young children. And, news of the body being found has left them shaken.
"I just want it to be safe around here for my daughter," JImenez said.
Jimenez, along with a few other neighbors, tell us that they heard gunshots in the area around 11 p.m. Wednesday. Metro Homicide has yet to release an exact time of death for Byrd.
The homeowner at 453 S. Walnut tells Newscenter 16 she was shocked to learn of the discovery.
