SOUTH BEND, Ind.--- Some of the 21 dead animals found in an alley over the weekend have been sent to Purdue University.

Those that weren't too decomposed were sent to the university's Animal Disease Diagnostic Lab

Officials there will do a full legal necropsy.

This should be able to determine the cause of death.

The animals were found Sunday in an alley along the 700 block of East Indiana Avenue in South Bend.

One was recognized as the missing pet cat of a nearby family.

Police believe the animals in question were caught in a small trap.

Investigators are trying to determine if animal cruelty played a role in the deaths.
