"Damsel in Defense" aims to help women protect themselves

With more and more home invasions and robberies in our area, women are looking for ways to protect themselves and their families. But not everyone wants to carry a gun.

One business, called Damsel in Defense, offers an alternative, all geared toward women. Their mission is to equip, empower and educate people about personal safety.

"It was founded by two mommies that wanted non-lethal forms of protection for their family," said Rachel Grubaugh. "Their husbands traveled a lot and they set out to form a line of cute but protective products."

All of the items are meant to help in the case of an emergency. "Junk in the Trunk" is an emergency car kit that includes items like jumper cables, a first aid kit, an emergency blanket and a flashlight that doesn't run off of batteries.

As far as personal protection devices, they offer items like the "Pack a Punch" stun gun which is compact and includes a flashlight.

"If you feel threatened you can fire it and tell them to back up," Grubaugh said.

They also have pepper spray on key chains that can fit inside of a purse.

"Our pepper sprays are really fantastic because they have 18% red pepper, which is the hottest you can manufacture and sell, and they also have a UV dye in them so if you spray someone and they don't catch them and they pick them up later in the week, that UV dye lasts for up to a week," Grubaugh said. "They can put them up to a black light and they will glow."
