Crime Watch: School and workplace shootings

South Bend, Ind. A seminar coming to South Bend next month will touch on a very scary topic active shooter situations and how police respond to them. The best part is, the public can go for free.

On Thursday Lt. Cindy kilgore joined us with more on this very serious topic in our Crime Watch.
Here are some stats she shared with us:

  • A 12-year study shows a dramatic increase in active shooter incidents since Columbine (see graph in slideshow)
  • Just over half of these crimes occur in the workplace, 17% in schools, 17% in public places and 6% in religious establishments
  • In 20% of cases, the shooter goes mobile to another location
  • 43% are over before police can get to the scene
  • There have been 74 school shootings from Jan. 2013 to the middle of June 2014
  • The seminar will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 6 from 8 a.m.-Noon at the Century Center in downtown South Bend. It will focus on prevention, response and whether or not to arm teachers and employees. The seminar will feature Lt. Col. Dave Grossman (ret. Army Director) who is internationally recognized as an expert on human aggression and the roots of violence. It is free but you must register in advance by calling (574) 235-9610 or following the link on MichianaCrimeStoppers.com.
