ST. JOSEPH COUNTY Police are looking for tips about a fatal hit and run that occurred three years ago. They still don’t know who drove the vehicle that fled the scene.

Steven Niswonger, 40, got off the bus and was walking north along State Road 933 just north of Orchard Street in St. Joseph County on February 9, 2011. It was snowy, so he could not use the sidewalk.

A dark-colored SUV with Indiana plates hit him from behind around 7p.m. and fled the scene. Witnesses have described it as a Jeep Liberty, or a Dodge Durango.

“This person probably struck and killed him by accident, and it is time to come forward,” South Bend Police Lt. Cindy Kilgore says. “This doesn’t mean life in prison, but it gives the family an answer. It’s time to deal with this.”

Niswonger was a father of four, who loved music and songwriting. He had been visiting his mother in the hospital the night he was killed.

Anyone with information on the case is asked to contact Crime Stoppers by calling (800) 342-STOP, or in South Bend at 288-STOP. Tips are anonymous. Anyone with information leading to a rest could receive a cash reward of up to $1,000.
