A heroic rescue this morning in South Bend after a dog fell into the St. Joseph River.

Natalie Tavernier was heading into work Monday, when she saw a dog running into the street.

Tavernier was worried the dog was going to get hit by a car, so she stopped to look for identification on the dog. She says she wanted to call the dog into the proper authorities.

The dog alerted Tavernier to another dog that had fallen into the St. Joseph River.

Crews were able to use a ladder from the banks to the dog in the river. The dog was rescued safely.
