Credit cards may lead to hundreds in travel savings

According to one survey, high gas prices won't stop Americans from traveling over Memorial Day weekend or on other summer vacations. One in three plan on hitting the road, most Americans traveling by car.

While savings may not exist at the pump, an expert recomends looking elsewhere for money-savers, like the credit card.

Certain credit cards can save hundreds of dollars on travel perks like lost or damaged luggage claims, car rental fees, road side assistance and the option to enjoy first-class airport lounges. Plus, they can help with concierge assistance like theatre tickets and dinner reservations.

"A lot of times you get a credit card and there's a lot of fine print, you're mainly concerned with things like APR and interest rates, but really look to see what you have," said Anne Banas, executive director at Smarttravel.com
