Tensions between county and city are getting heated in a long-standing water and sewer disagreement between the city of Elkhart and a nearby subdivision.
Residents of Valley View Hills have used city water and sewer systems for years, but the city wants to change the way they pay, under a new compact agreement.
Some residents refused to sign, so the city threatened to turn off their services, beginning Wednesday morning. Come Wednesday night, that still hadn’t happened, after the county and local law enforcement stepped in.
According to reporting partners at the Elkhart Truth, the county refused to approve work permits involving county road right-of-way, essentially blocking the city's ability to cut service.
As an extra precaution, the Elkhart County Sheriff parked in residents' driveways Wednesday, to make sure nothing was done to their services.
