ELKHART The sound of helicopters could soon grace the air around Elkhart General Hospital.
The county council approved a request to build a helipad on the hospital's roof so patients can get to the hospital faster, in an emergency. Currently, choppers have to land at the airport, and patients are taken to the hospital by ambulance.
Officials say the change won't affect neighbors much, at least in terms of noise. According to The Elkhart Truth, the chopper actually makes less noise than an ambulance siren.
A date to build the helipad hasn't yet been set. The hospital still needs approval from the Federal Aviation Administration and the Indiana Department of Transportation.
