KOSCIUSKO COUNTY Preventing gang violence costs city police forces a lot of money each year, but one unexpected cost is the price of replacing road signs that have been defaced with gang symbols.

2013 was a particularly rough year in Kosciusko County. They replaced 180 road signs. Stacey Page Online reports that's about three times as many as usual.

The new signs cost the department $15,000 in 2013. Now they are replacing vandalized signs with a type of sign that has a protective surface to make graffiti easier to scrub off. The enhancement costs an extra $10 per sign.
