A St. Joseph County court granted a continuance for the trial of a man accused on inappropriately texting a minor.

Eric West, 30, appeared in court for a status hearing during which his counsel requested a continuance. West is facing a misdemeanor charge of inappropriate communication with a child. He was arrested in October after allegations arose that he sent texts to a former student, who is now 12 years old.

The girl's mother found the messages and alerted police. West was the child's 5th grade teacher at Walt Disney Elementary School.

West’s next court date is set for March 28, 2013.
