Congressman Fred Upton was in Dowagiac Thursday. NewsCenter 16 asked him about the drought situation going on in Michigan.He says the freeze we had nailed the fruit crop and now we are dealing with a lack of rain which could negatively impact the vegetable crop.
So what can farmers do down the road if they have some losses?
“We've got a farm bill that's beginning to move now,” says Rep. Fred Upton. “The current farm bill expires in September. The senate passed one two weeks ago. Next week the congress returns back to Washington. The house agricultural committee is going to be working on legislation to extend that farm bill, look at a number of different provisions that are there. I'll be anxious to see how the committee works, so that we can try and get the job done before the end of the year.”
Upton says he recently spent time with a number of growers and things are tough right now.
