Niles, Mich. Congressman Fred Upton visited one of the largest manufacturing facilities in Berrien County Friday morning, to congratulate the workforce on its safety achievements.
Upton toured the Pilkington North America Plant, on West Chicago Road in Niles.
The company, which employs about 320 people, recently reached two major milestones, working 2 million hours without a lost-time incident, or a significant injury.
“2 million hours of not missing a single work day because of an accident is a great achievement that any company in America would like to have,” says Michigan Congressman Fred Upton.
“We're shooting for 3 million hours and I'm not going to jinx us with that because I truly believe we can do it,” says plant manager Pete Carpenter. “So it’s truly a team effort from me all the way down to everybody on all the shifts so I'm very proud of it as well.”
The plant has nearly doubled its workforce throughout the last three years alone, so officials say they've placed a big focus on "safety orientation" for new employees.
