A national BMX tour is made a pit stop in South Bend on Sunday as part of a summer-long scouting competition.
The Mike Spinner Monster Army Recon Tour made one of its two Midwestern stops at the The Kitchen BMX and Skatepark.
Monster Energy and Hookit started the 10-stop Recon Tour as a way to find rising action sport athletes across the country. The winner at each regional competition will go on to compete in the Recon Finals, a promising prize for those wishing to turn their love of action sports into a professional career.
"The scene here is amazing. Brett, made one of the best skateparks in America and we're here. This is one of the best skateparks or not if the top five skateparks in the United States," said Mike Spinner.
Local BMX star, Brett Banasiewicz, and his family hosted the event. Banasiewicz suffered a serious head injury in 2012 and has spent the last eight months recovering. Although he didn’t ride today, he said it was still a great pleasure to host the tour.
“As a pro BMX rider, my passion has always been to progress,” said Banasiewicz in a statement before Sunday, “this is a great contest for area riders to come and compete, and get a chance to become pro.”
