It was an exciting day for the Community Foundation of St. Joseph County as it crowned the winner of its 2014 Leighton Award for non-profit excellence.
Every year a local non-profit is recognized for its achievement with a $100,000 grant – an amount the organization must then raise in matching funds.
This morning folks mingled in the Century Center’s recital hall in downtown South Bend before the event got underway.
La Casa de Amistad received the foundation’s first 2014 Special Recognition Award.
And Downtown South Bend, Inc. was named the second Special Recognition winner.
Both received $10,000.
However, the Fischoff National Chamber Music Association took home top honors with this year’s Leighton Award.
“We feel really privileged as an arts organization to have won this prize because there are so many wonderful social service organizations that do so much work in our community but the arts are important,” said Ann Divine, Fischoff’s executive director.
She says that the money will go towards educational programs including the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition held every May and the outreach work they do within the community.
