UPDATE: Colorado search goes on for missing SJRMC doctor

A doctor from St. Joseph Regional Medical Center went missing Friday while hiking through the Colorado backcountry.

The Eagle County Sheriff's Department says James McGrogan was hiking with a group near Vail, Colo. They left the trail head around 8:30 a.m. Friday and decided to take a break around 10 a.m. McGrogan decided he would continue ahead of the group.

"He was going to meet up with them at the Eisman Hut," said Jessie Mosher, a public information officer with the Eagle Co. Sheriff's Department. "When the party got to the Eisman Hut, they had not seen McGrogan on the trail path and he was not located at the hut itself."

Shortly after 5 p.m., McGrogan's fellow hikers notified police he was missing. A large search effort was launched.

On Monday, four search-and-rescue teams were looking over an 18-square mile radius for McGrogan. A helicopter is also being used in the search.

"Mr. McGrogan is in good shape and he also had significant equipment with him that would allow him to make it for several days in the backcountry," Mosher said.

But, the difficult terrain and heavy snow are posing challenges.

St. Joseph Regional Medical Center said Dr. McGrogan joined the staff in February as a partner of Valley Emergency Physicians.

In a statement SJRMC said: "We ask that you say a special prayer for Dr. McGrogan, his wife, family and the devoted rescue personnel searching for him."
