This week marks the anniversary of two long-standing murders in the Michiana cold case files.

March 16th marks 15 years since used-car dealer Harvey Smith was murdered in Elkhart. His handyman found him dead in his home on Riverdale Avenue in 1998.

He is described as being a fan of Elvis with a huge heart, and also a very cautious man.

“It wouldn’t be typical for him to be in his home and leave it unlocked,” South Bend Police Lt. Cindy Kilgore says.

However the door was unlocked the night of the murder, and Kilgore says it appears his dinner had been interrupted. He had multiple stab wounds to his head and neck.

“This can be considered a very personal attack,” Kilgore says. “Statistically these types of attacks are done by one who knows him.”

A second murder occurred on or just before March 17th, 1993 in South Bend. Kelly Diego Malczynski was found outside a home in the 900 block of South Ironwood, killed by a single gunshot wound to the head.

“His was more of an execution-style killing,” Kilgore says. “That could imply someone that was not a personal contact of his.”

Anyone with information on either of these murders should call Michiana Crime Stoppers’ anonymous tip line at (574) 288-STOP or (800) 342-STOP.
