Cleveland and Gumwood Road construction set to begin soon

Some major moves are being made along Cleveland road.

Houses and businesses are being torn down.

It's paving the way for a multi-million dollar development.

Construction is set to start sometime later this spring on a multi-use project that includes everything from businesses, restaurants and apartments.

“It’s really opened up,” says Persian Rug Gallery owner, Jenni Gordizi. “People have been able to see our spots a lot more. We have had a lot of people comment about being able to see our mall and we're excited about that.”

Right now 46 acres are being cleared at the corner of Cleveland and Gumwood, clearing the way for the first phase of the Great Lakes Capital project.

Back in December Mishawaka's city plan commission voted to annex the land.

For area businesses the extra foot traffic is welcome

However there are questions lingering about how long Gumwood Road will be closed.

“We were a little surprised to see they were going to close it for so long,” says Jessica Snead, assistant manager for Villa Macri. “We were initially told at least one lane would be open but it’s only a couple of minutes out of the way if they take Fir Road from the north and Grape Road from the south.”

Starting Monday April 7 parts of Gumwood road will be closed.

The St. Joseph County Highway Department couldn't say for how long yet or exactly where along Gumwood Road the road would be closed.

Residents living in Brendon Hills were already warned that the road would be closed southbound of the subdivision’s entrance. It’s anticipated the project will last through the summer. When it was proposed before the Mishawaka plan commission the proposal included widening Gumwood Road at Cleveland Road to prevent traffic back-ups.
