"Cleaning for a Reason" helping women with cancer

Women fighting cancer in Michiana have a new place to turn to for help. The program is keeping their houses clean when they don't have the time or energy to do so. It's called "Cleaning for a Reason."

The Maids, which serves South Bend, Mishawaka, Granger, Elkhart and surrounding areas, became a part of the national program last year. So far they've helped out seven local cancer patients with free cleaning.

Michele Scherpenberg is one of them. She has finished her treatments and is working to get her strength back after battling breast cancer.

"Cancer is an interesting disease to have to face,” says Michele Scherpenberg a breast cancer survivor. “With that, you discover a strength about yourself but you also realize that you have to rely on people sometimes and for me that was a hard thing to give up but I think that for me it’s made me a bit more humble and more appreciative."

Patients who receive the help get one free cleaning a month, for four months. Currently they have a waiting list, but you can still sign up.
