City shuts down to celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
In celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., folks gathered together to participate in the annual Civil Rights March Monday.
They gathered in the County City Building for speeches, prayers, songs and dancing.
This is an event that has being going on for more than 30 years, but there was one thing different this year.
For the first time the City of South Bend was shut down for the holiday.
After the presentation those taking part finally made their way to the Century Center where they were greeted by different vendors and exhibits.
Each vendor or exhibit was run by different community groups and small businesses. Some were selling jewelry, t-shirts, Girl Scout Cookies and there was even a barber salon.
Inspiration Barber Salon gave free haircuts for the event, all in the spirit of the holiday.
“I think that it is awesome that even as a city in South Bend, Indiana that we take time out to close down our banks and close down our businesses so that we can come together as a people, not just as a Black race, not just as a White race or Latino race but as human race so we can support a good cause,” says Kintae Lark.
Lark said the salons goal was to reach out to 20 to 25 people before the end of the day. All of the vendors and exhibits were closed by 4 p.m.
