City By City Report for May 7, 2014

Here's a recap of our City By City report from Wednesday, May 7, 2014:


A ribbon cutting ceremony will be held Wednesday outside the new village post office. Some USPS services will now be available inside the LaPaz Quick Mart, on U.S. 31. You can buy stamps or packing supplies 7 days a week, during longer hours than a regular post office.

Berrien Springs

The village of Berrien Springs is about to get more efficient. According to our reporting partners at the Herald Palladium, the council approved money this week, to buy 44 new LED bulbs for village street lights. It will cost $8,300 but the bulbs are expected to save about $4,300 in electricity costs each year. They last 10-to 15 years each.

Berrien County

If you have some old tires to get rid of, you have a chance Thursday. According to our reporting partners at the Herald Palladium, you can take them to the Berrien County Road Commission garage on Napier Ave. in Benton Township Thursday or Friday. There is a small fee for recycling, $2 to 10, depending on the size of your tire, and if it is still on the rim.


Wednesday is National Bike to School Day and St. Pius X Catholic School students plan to celebrate this Friday. They'll ride from Knollwood Country Club to the school which is just over three miles. Bike helmets will be mandatory and parents or guardians will have to accompany the child. Police will also help with safety during the ride at busy intersections.

Granger, Warsaw, Stevensville

Martin's Supermarkets is offering summer chef camps for kids. Signs-ups are going on now for programs in Warsaw, Granger and Stevensville. These hands-on classes are for kids entering kindergarten all the way up to teens. Click here for more information.

South Bend

Thursday night’s "Brew and View" at the State Theatre in downtown features "The Princess Bride". They're encouraging attendees to dress the part and there will be challenges for prizes. Tickets are $3 at the door. The show starts at 7 p.m. The theatre is serving alcohol to those 21 and older.
