City By City Report for March 26, 2014

Here's a recap of our City By City report from Wednesday, March 26, 2014:

St. Joseph County

The St. Joseph County Traffic Safety Partnership will be named the top performing DUI task force agency of 2013 on Wednesday. The Indiana Criminal Justice Institute will make that recognition during a news conference at the Mishawaka Police Department. The partnership includes Lakeville, Mishawaka, New Carlisle, North Liberty, Notre Dame, Roseland, South Bend, St. Joseph County and Walkerton police departments.

Mishawaka

Fifth graders will compete in a "Battle of the Books" at Penn High School on Wednesday night and you're invited to cheer them on. Seventeen teams of students each read six books and will now be quizzed about them. It is taking place in the Penn cafeteria at 7 p.m.

Jersey Mikes Subs in in Mishawaka is giving back to the community on Wednesday. The restaurant will donate 100% of its sales to the March of Dimes Indiana chapter. The fundraiser goes on all day. Jersey Mike’s is located just off Main Street. They're open on Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. This event kicks off a "month of giving" for the restaurant chain.

Granger

You can help “raise the dough" to fight cancer on Wednesday. A fundraiser is going on at Tony Sacco's Pizza from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Fifteen percent of sales from food and drinks goes to Relay for Life. You will need to give your server a coupon to make it count. We have a link to it on the Big Red Bar.

South Bend

The Food Bank of Northern Indiana has announced that its 20th anniversary luncheon will be held on April 17. The event will commemorate two decades of feeding the hungry across our area. The luncheon will take place at the Gillespie Conference Center. The keynote speaker will be WNBA star and Notre Dame alum Ruth Riley.

Applications are now being accepted for downtown South Bend's 11th annual Art Beat. The deadline is June 1. Art Beat takes place on the streets and sidewalks of downtown in August, but artists from several counties are welcome to apply.

Downtown South Bend has announced its annual Fridays by the Fountain concert lineup, featuring bands of several genres, including rock, folk, country, and jazz. Musicians perform from 11:45 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. at the Jon Hunt Plaza, every Friday afternoon. Here is a list of who's playing from DTSB:

Hartford

New Buffalo Township has a new parks director. Hartford resident Scott Nykamp will begin the job April 7. The township board agreed earlier this month to create the full-time position. According to our reporting partners at the Herald Palladium, Nykamp will oversee seasonal activities and employees, and will be in charge of grant proposals.
