Here's a recap of our City By City report from Monday July 28, 2014:
A kids cooking camp starts Monday in Syracuse. "Kindercooks" is a four-day event for kids ages 4 to 7 years old. The cost is $25 a day and it is held at Blue Barn Berry Farm on North 300 East from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The camp explores cooking as well as kitchen safety. For more info call (574) 742-2247.
There are new policies for room rentals, accommodation and space for rent from the Starke County council for business owners. According to our reporting partners at WKVI, starting in September, those who pay what's called the innkeepers tax will now pay Starke County instead of the state. The county council just approved the measure. The rate will be the same, but those who don't pay on time could face steeper fines up to 100% of the tax itself.
If you're getting a lot of goodies from your garden but aren't sure what to do with them all, listen to this. Wellfield Botanic Gardens' next "Garden to Table" series session will be on Saturday at 11 a.m. Space is limited and registration required. You can call (574) 266-2006 for more information.
Two cities are looking to raise money for community bus services with property tax millages on the ballot. According to our reporting partners at the Herald Palladium, Buchanan residents will consider a four-year plan to raise $85,000 for their dial-a ride service, while Niles has a two year proposal to raise $97,000. The election is August 5.
A Benton Harbor member of the Boys and Girls Club is headed to Washington D.C. to compete for national youth of the year. Congratulations to Jasminika Newbern from Benton Harbor High School. According to our reporting partners at WSJM, she was presented the regional award in Chicago this past weekend by Grammy winner Patti LaBelle. Newbern also received a college scholarship for $10,000.
