Update: Christmas program helps needy families

Friday, November 2, is the last chance to sign up to be a part of St. Vincent De Paul’s annual Christmas Program.

Every year the Christmas program provides toys and foods to 1,000 families.

This year nearly 300 families and organizations have chosen to “adopt” a family this holiday season by donating a few toys and a food basket. The number of contributors has reached a record high for St. Vincent De Paul’s, but it is still shy of their goal of 500.

Families like Tasha Grahl's are extremely thankful for what they have to offer to those in need.

Grahl says, "As a parent you don't want to have to tell your child that they can't have anything, you know that Santa didn't come this year. Just to think about it I get upset, because it's sad. So to have this relief is an asset to our community."

Charlie Thompson works at St. Vincent De Paul and says the toy drive is a great way to help families in the community.

"It's a great opportunity for a family to provide for someone else in need," according to Thompson, St. Vincent De Paul will even help families figure out what gifts to get.

"We'll give you all the contact information, we even encourage to reach out to the parents, what are the children's likes so they can get the right toys for them."

St. Vincent De Paul is also looking for volunteers to help out at the distribution center on Ardmore Trail in South Bend.
