More foster children are now being placed in forever homes in the Hoosier state.
The Indiana Department of Child Services says there were a record number of adoptions last year. For the year of 2011 more than 17-hundred children were adopted, including a record month in December with 439.
Foster parents Jim and Kim Philson of North Liberty have been a part of the program for twenty years now.
They've adopted 15 children and fostered at least 20, plus recently they had two of their own children.
After several successful adoptions the couple has become known as a family that specializes in adoptions that have failed for children in the past.
“(It takes) just an incredible amount of love,” says foster mom Kim Philson. “We just always try to understand and remember where they're from. What would it be like if someone stormed into your house today and took you?”
In Indiana the child must stay with a foster parent for at least 6 months before adoption is an option. Right now there are about 300 children in foster care still up for adoption.
Indiana's Department Of Child Services says their primary goal is to keep children at home with their families using supportive service but admit that's not always an option.
