Chicago cop driving wrong direction kills two

A suburban Chicago cop is suspected of driving the wrong way on Lake Shore Drive Friday causing a three-vehicle crash that killed two men.

The crash happened around 4 a.m. Friday morning and shut down the busy roadway for five hours.

Police say off-duty North Chicago Officer Terrel Garrett was driving an SUV north in the southbound lanes and traveling at least 15 miles over the speed limit.

According to witnesses, Garrett ignored the beeps and flashing lights of concerned drivers before finally smashing into two cars near Diversey. The crash killed two people and injured another.

It's a crash that's left many grieving tonight.

“We lost someone we thought we would have forever. It's just so hard,” says Deborah Cuevas. "We love them with all our heart. You know we'll always have them in our heart and our minds."

Both Garrett and a woman driving one of the vehicles he hit were taken to the hospital in critical condition.

The woman has since been released.

The North Chicago Police Department has placed Garrett on administrative leave but he has not been charged.

Police are investigating whether alcohol was a factor in the crash.
