Cequent will leave Goshen for Mexico

Around 450 people will lose their jobs when Cequent Performance Products moves production from its Goshen plant to an existing facility in Mexico.

Workers were informed of the change around 3 p.m. Wednesday, just one day before Thanksgiving.

They were allowed to leave for the day after the announcement without sacrificing holiday pay.

"Right before the holidays we find out [my fiance] is going to lose his job to Mexico," said Chanda Steiner, whose fiance works at Cequent. "And, he has five kids he has to take care of. So, that's really hard for all of us right now."

The move is one of several the company is making in an effort to cut costs and increase capacity.

Cequent will also close a Huntington, Ind. warehouse as part of the transition.

"I understand they want more money and it's kind of a greedy thing I think," Steiner said. "And, I'm disappointed in them."

The company plans to phase out jobs at the plant starting in 2013.

Steiner says the news will make it hard to enjoy the upcoming holidays.

"What are we going to do now? With five kids? I mean, it's a big deal for all these families and us. It's going to be hard to be happy and celebrate."
