South Bend, Ind. Downtown South Bend is going green. A new project at the Century Center is transforming existing plant beds into a year round herb garden.
The garden, located inside the walkway between the Century Center and Doubletree, will grow organic herbs including basil, rosemary, parsley and leaf lettuce.
The project will be managed by Green Bridge Growers, which provides jobs for young adults with autism. Managers plan to market the fresh herbs to downtown restaurants.
“We think this walkway could be very much a showpiece for Downtown South Bend, as far as we know there are not installations like this in other cities where there is a green roof,” says Jan Pilarski with Green Bridge Growers. “So it's very innovative and I think we are at the cutting edge here.”
