SOUTH BEND, Ind. - Families stopping by the Notre Dame Bookstore on Saturday enjoyed a holiday treat – a special reading by Notre Dame President Father John Jenkins and Digger Phelps as The Grinch.
The students have left, but that did not stop dozens of parents and kids from visiting the Notre Dame campus today.
They were getting into the Christmas spirit at the Hammes Notre Dame Bookstore. Father Jenkins read the group a Christmas story and, in return, the kids sang him a Christmas carol.
The bookstore open house would not be complete without a reading of How the Grinch Stole Christmas. For that, former Notre Dame basketball coach Digger Phelps dressed the part as he read aloud the holiday classic.
“Over the past few weeks there's been hustle and bustle getting ready for Santa Claus, getting ready for all the presents and treats,” said Jim O'Connor, the bookstore director. “This allows us to center back on the meaning of Christmas with the president of the university. What a special treat for the people of the community to see the president in a different light!”
This is the fourteenth year the bookstore has put on their Christmas open house.
