ELKHART, Ind. Lanes were restricted on Lexington Avenue in Elkhart Friday, after a private water line broke Thursday afternoon.
The service line provides water to residents living in Lexington Square Apartments.
The city utility department said the road shifted as a result of the break, but until private management makes the repairs, the extent of the damages remains unknown.
The city shut off the water to prevent flooding. Crews were on-site excavating Friday.
“The city has a twelve inch water main going parallel to Lexington Avenue. And then the apartment has a six to an eight inch feeder line that comes off of that,” explained City of Elkhart engineer Mike Machlan.
He added water main breaks tend to happen when the weather changes because of shifting ground.
Apartment management said the repairs were likely to be complete by 5 p.m. Friday.
