Weather related business closings common

University Park Mall closed at 1:00 p.m., Martin’s Supermarkets will call it quits at 7:00 p.m.

Today’s winter weather made it yet another bad day to be in business in Michiana.

“A rough start, it starts off as Restaurant Week for the first day, it’s not looking too good,” said Lauren Unger, Asst. Manager at the East Bank Emporium.

Fact is, Mother Nature dished out a heaping helping of ‘more of the same,’ just when downtown South Bend eateries were set to try something different.

“Restaurant Week” is a concentrated effort to lure in new customers through dining discounts. The East Bank Emporium was set to offer three course meals for $33 per person—starting tonight.

“We stayed open until 2:00 p.m. just serving lunch and then our owner finally called it so we closed, and we're closed for dinner and lunch tomorrow, but hopefully, fingers crossed, we will be open for dinner to start off restaurant week,” said Unger.

Today, even those hired to clear the roads ended up littering the right of way.

A South Bend city snow plow went off the road while clearing Riverside Drive near Angela. It had to be pulled out by a loader.
What chance did ordinary cars have?

“All day long, that’s all we’ve been doing, towing out cars,” said tow truck driver Dan Gregory with Rick’s 66.

A bunch of inner tubes that weren’t even on cars ended up going nowhere this weekend. The inner tubes that are supposed to be used for recreation at St. Patrick’s Park tubing hill.

The St. Pat’s hill was closed both Saturday and Sunday because there was too much of a ‘good thing.’

“The (snow on the) tube hill was probably a little bit above my knees so wouldn't really give the kids and the families an opportunity to slide down until we got maintenance down on Sunday. To kind of get those groomed up,” said Jamie Hartzke with the St. Joseph County Parks.

The parks department did manage to open the tubing hill at Ferrettie Baugo County Park over the weekend, although attendance was light.

If the weather does decide to cooperate, the tubing hills are scheduled to open on Saturday’s and Sundays through the end of February, while the restaurant week discounts will actually continue through February 9th.
