The South Bend School Board will have to slash its budget once again, thanks to lower enrollment than anticipated.

During its budget process, the school corporation estimated it would lose 366 students this year.

However, during its official count day on august 30th, the corporation was down 475.

That means it will receive less funding from the state than anticipated.

So the board will have to make more cuts to the budget , and they are hoping to avoid personnel.

“We have to look at things like reducing our energy costs if we can, which would then allow us to increase some of the technology spending we have,” said superintendent Dr. Carole Schmidt. “Reducing printing costs perhaps. Reducing some areas of minimal services or classroom supplies or some of those areas.

Schmidt says the board may have to look at cutting some programs.

Right now the corporation is looking at a loss of about 670,000, But that number will likely change after a second student count in February.
