A traditional Lenten mass at Notre Dame was led by Bishop Rhoades in the pope's honor Friday afternoon.
Nearly 400 students from the Fort Wayne - South Bend Catholic Diocese gathered at Notre Dame's Sacred Heart Basilica.
The students have been trained in the international chorus where they learned traditional catholic music. This is the third year for the event.
Typically Bishop Rhoades gives a Lenten liturgy but he wanted to celebrate the announcement of a new pope also.
“It goes back to his name,” says Bishop Rhoades. “He chose the name Francis, which Jesus said to Saint Francis from the cross to rebuild my church. I think there is something about where that name came from that is very significant. It's looking at those virtues of simplicity and humility.”
Bishop Rhoades was pleasantly surprised when the pope was announced. He was in Fort Wayne at the time watching the news on television.
